I recovered this U.S. Geological Survey pipe cap in poor condition. It was found standing up out of the ground and behind a fence that surrounds a few historic buildings as part of the Torres Martinez Historic District located at the Martinez Indian Reservation Headquarters. In speaking with one of the security officers who gave me access inside the fenced off area to take pictures, the fence was installed last year to prevent vandals from destroying the historic buildings. He believes this old benchmark was uprooted during the installation of the fence. I related to him that the pipe cap BM is very old, possibly the same age as the structures the fence protects (1907). There is no date stamped on the cap face but it has the elevation stamping of '-135' and designation stamping of 'T'. This cap also appears on a topography map as 'BM -135'. This cap is not part of the NGS database. My posted coordinates will place you very close to this mark. Let's hope this pipe cap stays safe behind the fence for the duration.
