Since the beginning of the pilgrimage of Saint Jacques de Compostela (Santiago de Compostela in Spanish) , the pilgrims have borrowed the lines of communication for all other travelers. Except in the immediate vicinity of the shrines, there was therefore not strictly specific pilgrimage paths .

This is from 1882 with the printing of the last book of the Codex Calixtinus collection composed in the twelfth century, has spread the concept of Pilgrimage . This book starts indeed with these words: "Four paths will Saint- Jacques ."

Very briefly described , these paths are designated by the names of the towns they pass through. As the entire manuscript , are described and named in Latin. The habit was then taken to give names to contemporary Latin -sounding tracks . This may be justified when they follow ancient Roman roads .

The path is marked with the symbol of the pilgrims ( the shell St Jacques ) . This point is located on one of four routes through France, which passes through St. Martin of Tours , St. Hilary of Poitiers, Saint- Jean d'Angely , St. Eutropius of Saintes and Bordeaux

Depuis l'origine du pèlerinage de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle (Santiago de Compostela en espagnol), les pèlerins ont emprunté les voies de communication de tous les autres voyageurs. Sauf à proximité immédiate des sanctuaires, il n'y avait donc pas à proprement parler de chemins de pèlerinage spécifiques.

C'est à partir de 1882, avec l'impression du dernier Livre du Codex Calixtinus, recueil composé au XIIe siècle, que s'est répandue la notion de chemins de pèlerinage. Ce livre commence en effet par ces mots : « Quatre chemins vont à Saint-Jacques ».

Très sommairement décrits, ces chemins sont désignés par les noms des villes qu'ils traversent. Comme l'ensemble du manuscrit, ils sont décrits et dénommés en latin. L'habitude a ensuite été prise de donner des noms à consonance latine aux chemins contemporains. Ceci peut être justifié quand ils suivent d'anciennes voies romaines.

Le chemin est jalonné du symbole des pélerins (la coquille St Jacques). Cette borne se trouve sur une des 4 routes qui traverse la France , celle qui passe par Saint-Martin de Tours, Saint-Hilaire de Poitiers, Saint-Jean d’Angély, Saint-Eutrope de Saintes et la ville de Bordeaux
