The courthouse houses the local arm of the British Columbia Provincial Court. In this building Initial Appearances, Hearings and Arraignment Hearings are held once a month. Specific days are TBA.

This courthouse was officially opened on June 24th, 1991 by Attorney General, The Honourable Russell G. Fraser. Unstaffed, this court is manned by personnel from the Cranbrook Courthouse on a rotational basis.

Architecturally, the building is completely modern, with the notable exception of a small portico and two pairs of severely modernized pillars at the entrance which pay homage to the Roman Renaissance Courthouses of yesteryear.

The Honorable Russell Gordon Fraser became Attorney General of the province of British Columbia on July 13, 1990. A member of the BC Social Credit Party, he was elected to the provincial legislature in 1986 in the electoral district of Vancouver South. In the 1991 BC general election Fraser ran third, with just 27.42% of the votes cast. This was the era of the demise of the Social Credit party, which had governed BC off and on (more on than off) from 1952.
