Two large mosaic murals, approx. 20 feet high by 6 feet wide. One of the panels featuring a large Heron bird the other a Salmon.
The stunning murals are mounted on an end wall of a 3 story property, at the entrance to a small car park, in Church St. Pontypridd.
The Murals are most often viewed from Gelliwasted Road, as you pass St Catherin's church, from that distance the murals appear painted.
The Church Street Murals.
"The initiative for the mural came from third-year students in the Arts Department at the University of Glamorgan under their tutor, Mrs Frances Woodley of the Ceramics Department. It was designed and created by them with the help of children from Ysgol Gynradd Evan James, and was a final-year degree project. The idea and the facilitating of the project was decided at a meeting in the Otley Arms in Treforest between the students and Y Celteiddwyr.
The objective of the mural was to celebrate the rejuvenation of the valleys and the return of wildlife after generations of mining and industry had polluted the air and rivers. Today, herons can be spotted flying towards the old bridge to feed in the shadow of Ynysangharad Park and reports of salmon in the River Taff were also an inspiration to the project.
One of our leading members was able to raise the details of the project with the Pontypridd Market Company in order to find a suitable location within the town. The alcoves in the building in Church Street were ideal for such a mural. The theme for the mural, "The Valley Awakes" was decided at the meeting, and local actor, Dorien Thomas suggested the words."
