A memorial to King County Sheriff Paul Vinson, who was killed on 19 May 1972 in the line of duty with DPS Trooper Gayle L. Holmes, stands in front of the King County Courthouse in downtown Guthrie TX. It is the most southerly of three memorials to King County law enforcement personnel who have died in public service.
The monument reads as follows:
"We the People of the State of Texas acknowledge and thank King County Sheriff Paul Vinson for the great sacrifice he made to keep the public safe. His efforts will stand the test of time. May God Bless his soul. May 19, 1972"

King County Sheriff's Department, Texas
End of Watch: Friday, May 19, 1972
Sheriff Paul Vinson and Patrolman Gayle Holmes, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, were shot and killed while answering a disturbance call outside a rural store between Paducah and Guthrie.
While they were placing one man in the patrol car, another man stepped onto the porch of the store behind them and began firing. A third highway patrolman returned fire, but suffered no injury.
The suspect was taken into custody at a ranch about a mile away. He was later convicted of Sheriff Vinson's murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Sheriff Vinson was serving his second term. He was survived by his wife and son."
