The Calder and Hebble Navigation
The Calder and Hebble Navigation is an inland waterway that was constructed in sections between 1764 and 1794
Unlike a canal which is a truly man made waterway, this navigation consists of man made improvements to existing rivers, the River Calder and the River Hebble.. Man made channels by passed weirs on the river and locks were constructed to compensate for the difference in height along the various sections of the canal. It connects
Wakefield and Sowerby bridge and these days is almost exclusively used by leisure boats.
Shepley Bridge Marina
The marina was originally constructed as a boatyard and dry dock, and is situated next to lock number 11 on the canal. The lock is situated at the junction with one of the artificial stretches of water and the River Calder itself.
