Grosse Freiheit 36 is a music club which apparently was once the Kaiserkeller. Their website (
visit link) features two of the original posters which show that the Beatles though playing here were not the headliners and further informs us:
"In the Kaiser cellar of our house are the boards that mean the (music) world, because in the Kaiser cellar already played the Beatles - in the fall of 1960, when the Fab Four from Liverpool yet to newcomers to the island
belonged. The then owner Bruno Koschmider was very stingy and paid the Beatles only DM 150 per week for 6 hours daily appearance. Repairs at the club he performed only if they were unavoidable. Therefore, the Liverpool stomped on an evening so energetically to the beat that the rotten stage platform collapsed and had to be replaced. "That was the birth of pounding beats," Paul McCartney told during a visit in 1989."
