Site Of Water Driven Corn Mill - Wetherby, UK - Water Mills on Waymarking.com

The mill stood next to a weir on the River Wharfe near to the main road through the town.

These days the area around the water wheel has been preserved as a historical site. The water wheel is still visible and a large cog wheel from the inside of the mill is also on display. This cog wheel was unearthed when some new houses were built on the river bank.

Since the Millennium a statue of two spawning salmon has also been on display to reflect the natural history of the site.

There are two separate blue plaques near to the site and between them they give the history of the mill and the area around it.

WEIR GARTH
There has been a Water Mill at
Wetherby since before 1221 where corn
and rape were ground. Later it was
a Saw Mill until it burnt down in
1944. The Salmon Steps opposite
were built in 1871 at a cost
of £30. The remains of
earlier bridges across the
river can be seen below
the arches.

WETHERBY WEIR
PRESERVATION TRUST
This cog wheel was unearther in 1991.
It was refurbished by the Trust
who in 1982 saved and restored the weir.
When working this wheel was turned
by a shaft which came directly
from the water wheel of the mill.
It was set on this plinth by
Persimmons Homes PLC. on 26-2-93
to preserve part of the
history of Wetherby.
