A murderer, Rigaud, is imprisoned in Marseilles, but manages to escape and heads for London. At the same time Arthur Clennam is also heading back to London, after the death of his father. In London he goes to see his invalided mother and gives her his father watch. The watch contains a note DNF, meaning do not forget.

In the Marshalsea debtor’s prison live the Dorrit family. William Dorrit, the father is imprisoned there. His family, including Amy, known as Little Dorrit, are allowed out during the day. Amy supports the family by sewing, and is employed by Mrs Clennam. Arthur Clennam thinks that the watch and it’s message may be connected to Amy. He follows Amy to Marshalsea and inquires about William Dorrit’s debt. Whilst there he meets inventor Daniel Doyce. Arthur goes into business with Doyce.

Arthur’s investigation of William Dorrit uncovers the fact that William is the lost heir to a fortune. This allows the Dorrits to leave Marshalsea. Unnoticed by Arthur, Amy has fallen for Arthur die to his kindness to the family. The Dorrits move to Rome, but William and his brother Frederick die there. Amy, now alone, makes her way back to London to stay with her sister Fanny and her husband Edmund Sparkler.

In a sub plot, Arthur helps his friends, the Meagle family. The Meagles are upset about their daughter Pet’s marriage to an artist called Gowan. Their foster daughter, Tattycoram is enticed away from the family by Miss Wade. Miss Wade is an associate of Rigaud, and the jilted lover of Gowan.

Edmund Sparkler’s stepfather, Mr Merdle, is a fraudster. He defrauds and bankrupts both the Dorrits and Arthur Clennam. Arthur is put into Marshalsea prison for debt. He becomes ill and Amy nurses him back to health.

Meanwhile, the murderer Rigaud arrives in London. He blackmails Mrs Clennam over the fact that she has not told Arthur that she is not his mother. Arthur’s father had been pressured by his rich uncle into marrying Mrs Clennam. Mrs Clennam had taken Arthur as his, providing the real mother was denied access. The mother died of grief.

Mortified by his actions Clennam’s uncle made a bequest to the mother and the man that befriended her, Amy’s Uncle Frederick. As Frederick had no heirs the bequest should go to Amy.

Mrs Clennam had kept the knowledge of the legacy from Amy. In an act of remorse she leaves her house to tell Amy and beg for forgiveness. Mrs Clennam is forgiven, and as she is forgiven her house comes tumbling down, killing Rigaud in the process. Amy forfeits her inheritance rather that tell Arthur what she has learnt.

Arthur is released from Marshalsea after Damniel Doyce returns from Russia a rich man. Arthur and Amy marry.
