This engine, on display at the Creston Museum, is just that - somewhat of a mystery.

This is a two cylinder gasoline engine with one piece cylinder and heads. It has what appears to be a priming cup on one of the cylinders and a right angle drive to a four cylinder distributor, half of which is actually used. A valve train isn't obvious and what appears to be a carburetor, two valve stems with springs and an intake manifold appear near the bottom of the block, with an exhaust manifold higher up on the opposite of the block.
The gearing to the distributor comes off the flywheel end of the crankshaft and appears to be geared 1:1. What does that tell you? Along with the lack of a valve train, it tells me that what we have here is a 2 stroke engine. I wonder if, when running, it might sound a bit like a 2-71 Jimmy Diesel.
There wasn't a nameplate that I could find. Anyone ever seen one of these before?
Though this and many other great pieces of machinery are in a museum, they are all parts of outdoor displays, for which there is no charge to view.
