Yet another piece of farm equipment we've not seen before is this hay loader at the Creston Museum.

If this machine actually worked as advertised its owner would likely have been the envy of all his neighbours. Horse or tractor drawn, this implement could have eliminated most of the manual labour in the first stage of feed gathering, either saving the farmer time or money paid for help, or both.

As to how well it worked, we'll just have to surmise that it did. As for how it worked - it would have had a hay rack hitched directly behind and the ground driven mechanism would have picked up the hay as the machine was pulled across the hay field, elevating it onto the hay rack. The wood slats on the elevator chain are spaced rather far apart, so this would never have been able to pick up a short growing crop. The hay would likely have to be at least two feet or so in height. I can see that this loader may be capable of picking up a heavy hay crop without windrowing, but such would not be the case with a sparse hay crop as it would simply fall through the elevator chain.

Of course the farmer was still faced with the challenge of getting the hay into the hay loft/hay shed, etc., but I expect he was able to work that out as well.

This is one of the many outdoor displays at the museum, for which there is no admission fee required.
