Middle aged Gary King is determined to track down his four mates from his teenage years to relive their youth. His quest is to finish the Golden Mile, a pub crawl of twelve pubs in their home town of Newton Haven. The final pub is the World’s End.

Gary eventually persuades his middle aged mates to join him on his quest. Everything goes reasonably well until they reach the fourth pub, The Cross Hands. Here Gary has an altercation with a teenager in the gents. In the fight Gary knocks the head off the lad, revealing that the lad is a robot. More robots appear and the five mates get stuck in.

The five decide to continue their pub crawl. At the Mermaid there is a disco in session. Robots, impersonating attractive girls from their youth, try to take their DNA. They also recognise a guy at the disco, Adrian, who had died years earlier in a motorcycle crash.

By the time they get to the ninth pub, The Beehive, they are approached by Guy Shepherd, an ex teacher of theirs. He tries to persuade them to stop fighting the system and turn into robots. He in turn is shown to be a robot.

Suspicions surface amongst the group that one or more of them may be robots. In particular, Gary refuses to show his arms. Gary is determined to finish the pub crawl, and Andy follows him. Gary and Andy manage to get through the pub crawl and arrive at The World’s End. Despite Andy’s protests Gary pulls a pint at The World’s End. The bar lowers into a chamber below ground. There an alien explains that the robots are an invasion force, one of 2000 penetration points on Earth, and that they are responsible for the major advances in communication. The group are offered eternal youth if they become robots. They decline, arguing that humans should be free.

The invasion is abandoned by the alien, but Newton Haven starts to self destruct. The group escape but the Earth is sent back to the Dark Ages. The robots survive, but are mistrusted. Gary and Andy are in tact, but Peter and Oliver are now robots. Back in Newton Haven Gary leads younger robot versions of his friends into a pub. The barman refuses to serve robots and Gary and his friends start a brawl.
