The Stallard/Gray Cemetery was established in 1820. These field stones mark the earliest burials in the cemetery, only the one has a date and partial name on it. The Stallards were some of the earliest settlers in this area of Scott County and intermarried with the McConnell familys. This stone is a rare example that has an inscription on it, other than just initals. It reads : 1839 In Memory of M O P McC. I do believe this to be the final resting place of one of the decendants of Sheriff George McConnell that resided in the area known as Twin Springs just a few miles away. The stone is carved to a point, as another here that marks another unknown grave. I have seen other similar stones in McConnell cemeterys in Scott County, which I believe can be attributed to the Free Masons that many members of the McConnell clan were a part of.
Note*
Because of the semi- or non-permanent nature of these markers, many of these markers erode or corrode away. Waymarking them is a way of recording their existance and sharing these tributes for the future. In no way was this Waymark intended as part of a game, but for historic and genealogical purposes only.
