[The following text is, in part, from the museum's interpretive sign.]
The Mosaic Collection is composed of pavements and rarer wall mosaics that come mainly from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae.
The collection reflects the criteria of 18th and 19th century collecting which, conditioned by antiquitarian interests, was directed towards the recovery of 'beautiful' and representative objects, often neglecting all information regarding their original contexts.
Mosaic decoration was often used not only for paving but also for walls and vaulted ceilings and was spread throughout the Vesuvian towns during the 1st century BC as a form of decoration for baths, nirriphaea, garden walls and columns.
Mosaics in the collection includes the Alexander Mosaic, dating from circa 100 BC, originally from the House of the Faun in Pompeii. It depicts a battle between the armies of Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. Another mosaic found is that of the gladiatorial fighter depicted in a mosaic found from the Villa of the Figured Capitals in Pompeii.
