One of the most famous ghost towns in the world, Pompeii was buried by the ash and pumice launched from Mount Vesuvius when it exploded in AD 79.
Citizens were not prepared for such an incident and nearly everyone in this centre of tourism and commerce at the crossroads of Mediterranean trade died. The were buried, and remarkably preserved, under 6-7 metres of ash and pumice.
