Picture postcard Brigus sits on the shores of Conception Bay. Settled by Europeans in the early 17th century, Brigus is one of North America's most historic places.
Being connected to the sea, much of its history is of maritime interest:
* At one time it was a major sealing port. In 1847, Brigus sent 66 vessels to the seal hunt and over half were captained by natives of Brigus.
* It's the birthplace of Captain Robert A. Bartlett, the master mariner of arctic fame has immortalized the town in the annals of history. A monument at Bishop's Beach is a major tourist attraction, while Hawthorne Cottage (Bartlett's home in Brigus) has been declared a National Historic site.
Every summer Brigus comes alive with the hugely popular Blueberry Festival. Over 12,000 visitors from all over the world come to enjoy three days of music, traditional food, dancing, fireworks, and, of course, blueberries.
