The plaque says, "Anchialne ponds are brackish water pools formed by depressions, crevices or lava tubes that extend into the ground water table. These pools were termed anchialine pools after the Greek word anchialos, meaning near the sea. Although landlocked and occurring some distance from the sea, the pool exhibit tidal fluctuation because of the subterranean connections with the sea and the ground water movement through the highly porous lava.
The Wiakoloa Anchialine Pund Preservation Area, created by the developer and federal agencies, is managed for research and educational uses by the University of Hawaii under an endowment from Waikaloa Land Co. Guises tours may be arranged, and contributions to the University of Hawaii for continued research and education in Hawaii are welcomed.
Signs located around the preservation area explain more of the unique characteristics of the anchialine ponds.
DO NOT THROW RUBBISH FOOD, LIVE ANIMALS OR FISH INTO THE POOLS. NO FISHING ALLOWED, HELP US TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE THE POOLS."
