This memorial is located in the Laprairie Cemetery. Lt-Col. Julien Brosseau (1837-1912) was the founder of the Régiment de Maisonneuve.

"Julien Brosseau was a politician and businessman and also found time for military activities. On 14 June 1872 he was appointed captain of an infantry company in the 21st Battalion Voluntary Militia Infantry (Richelieu Light Infantry).

On 4 June 1880 he was promoted direct to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and put in command of the 85th, a new militia infantry battalion. He had raised this unit with the help of other French Canadians of the lower middle class from the north and south shores around Montreal, as well as from the city itself, and its officer corps was almost entirely French Canadian."source : (visit link)

"Homme politique et homme d’affaires, Brosseau trouve également le temps de prendre part à la vie militaire. Dès le 14 juin 1872, il est nommé capitaine d’une compagnie d’infanterie du 21e bataillon de milice du Richelieu, bien que son nom n’apparaisse pas sur la liste des officiers de milice deux ans plus tôt. Il obtient ensuite une promotion directe au rang de lieutenant-colonel et commandant d’un nouveau bataillon d’infanterie de milice, le 85e, le 4 juin 1880. Ce bataillon, qu’il a mis sur pied avec d’autres membres de la petite bourgeoisie canadienne-française de la rive sud et de la rive nord de Montréal, ainsi que de la ville même, possède un corps d’officiers presque entièrement canadien-français."
