The Homesteads began as a project to provide hope, homes and employment for the people of the region. By 1933, the Great Depression had left the Mountain people without jobs, hungry, desperate and despairing. To overcome the devastating economic effects of the times, Franklin Roosevelt began a series of New Deal Programs.
