Washington Circle (35), at the joint intersection of Pennsylvania and New Hampshire Avenues with K and Twenty-third Streets, is one of the most attractive of the city's smaller "breathing areas." At its center stands a bronze equestrian statue of George Washington, designed by Clark Mills and unveiled in 1860; the face was modeled from Houdon's celebrated bust, and the uniform was copied from one known to have been work by Washington. ---Washington City and Capital 1937
The bronze statue on a marble base is located in the center of Washington Circle Park, a park in the center of a roundabout in the Foggy Bottom area of Washington, D.C.
Smithsonian Art Inventory Description: "Equestrian portrait of George Washington dressed in his military uniform as he faces the British troops. The horse is rearing back, but Washington is sitting erect in the saddle as he looks out over the battle scene. His uniform consists of a long jacket with fringed epaulets, boots, and a three-cornered hat. He holds the horses reins in his proper left hand and his sword at his side in his proper right hand."
Smithsonian Art Inventory Inscription: "(Base, east side:) CLARK MILLS/SCULPTOR (Founder's mark is visible on rear proper left leg inside on knee.) (Front of base:) WASHINGTON signed Founder's mark appears."
