Temple Beth Israel
Jackson's Jewish congregation was orgainized in 1861. While not the first congregation in Mississippi, Beth Israel was the first to build a temple. In 1867-1868 a wood frame structure was built on this site. Used as both a school and house of worship, the building burned in 1874. Rebuilt here, the temple was relocated in 1940.
