Fort-Rolland was built by François LeNoir (known as Rolland because of his father, Rolland LeNoir) around 1670 to fortify an important trading post. Built with wooden stakes, the fort was guarded by a small garrison. The bodies of several victims of the August 5, 1689 massacre by the Iroquois (the Lachine massacre) were found at the foot of the stronghold.
