The small sundial in a very prominent position on the front of the mighty York Minster, has the text "Lucem demonstrat Umbra & (IHS, PX)".
"I think the correct translation is: "The shadow shows (demonstrates/displays) the light."
Lucem is accusative of lux.
Demonstrat is third person singular of demonstrare (he/she/it shows/demonstrates).
Umbra is nominative and in this case the subject of the sentence.
That fits with the function of a sundial. You look at the shadow and get the knowledge and enlightenment of the actual time. As you can see, there is also a religious aspect (IHS, PX).
