Royce Hall is one of the four original buildings on UCLA's Westwood campus and is the best known UCLA landmark. It is the main performing arts venue of the campus. The building was named after Josiah Royce, a California philosopher who graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. The building was severely damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and underwent a complete seismic renovation in 1998.
Frescoes on the ceiling above the front doors depict the original 13 majors offered by the University.
