"In sec. XVII, the region gained some notoriety when a prince from the interior of Ceylon here decided to build a church and a convent to perpetuate his memory applying the funds that the Crown paid him handsomely. It was known as the Prince of Candia, Telheiras Prince or Dark Prince"
"In 1625, King John, Prince of Candia, acquires land in Telheiras, in which builds an oratory. Around 1632, he founded a monastery at the site with the invocation of Our Lady of the Gate of Heaven, for the convalescence of Franciscan religious. In 1642, the government of the convent is delivered to Frei Manuel of Hope. That year, in consequence of the death of the Prince of Candia, much of the property donated to the monastery by the founder are deflected by the ministers of the day."
