"Nitrato do Chile" which means "Nitrate of Chile", was a fertilizer; it was composed primarily of "sodium nitrate" obtained from natural deposits of sodium nitrate (NaNO3), and was the most effective fertilizer that existed before the invention of artificial fertilizer.
Chile was the largest producer of saltpeter in the world from 1850 to 1930.
This ghost sign is composed of painted tiles; similar signs can be found in many villages of the Portuguese countryside.
