The entrance is the gatehouse that leads to a courtyard beyond. Above the centre of the arch is a statue of King Henry VIII with the inscription, that is in two parts, being between the top of the arch and below the statue.
The inscription to the left of the arch reads:
St Bartholomews Hospital
This front was rebuilt Anno 1702
in the first year of Queen Anne
The inscription to the right of the arch reads:
S W Pritchard K & Alder President
John Nicoll Esq Treasurer
The entrance is still in use today.
The gate house is a Grade I listed building with the entry at the English Heritage website telling us:
1702. Archway set in rusticated ground storey. Pair of Ionic pilasters frame 3, richly decorated storeys above and support pediment. Statue of Henry VIII to 1st floor. Short, unwindowed wings of 2 storeys. Plain at rear. Good iron gates, late C18 or early C19.
