It is one of the town's oldest commercial buildings and was built in 1876.
The original building was a two story wooden structure and was replaced
after the turn of the century with a one story rock building. The facade has
been updated several times and the interior has undergone a total
refurbishment in recent years. in 1954 the Boone County Headlight (a
weekly publication) merged with the HDT. The paper was operated until
recently as a family business. It was founded by the Newmans and later
operated by the Dunlap and Christenson families. It is currently operated
