This street was created in the 18th Century. Originally its proximity with the Church of Congregados, dedicated to Saint Anthony, inspired a different name: Rua de Santo António. Later its name was changed to the current 31st January, as it was here that fierce fighting took place during the Republican attempted Revolution which took place on on the 31st January 1891 (19 years before the Monarchy succumbed to another revolution).
It's the historical marker nr 53 of Porto.
