The Dominican Sisters of Spokane founded Holy Family Hospital on the north side of the Spokane, which is now part of the Providence Health Care system, which operates this hospital. The Sisters taught at Spokane’s Assumption School.

Providence Health Services in Washington was born in 1856, with the arrival of five nuns, the Sisters of Providence, from Montreal at Fort Vancouver on the banks of the Columbia River. Beginning by housing orphans and the elderly, they soon began building and opening hospitals throughout Washington. Through the years their network of small hospitals expanded into what is now a five-state, not-for-profit health and services network with more than 60,000 employees.

This sculpture, of twelve of the hospital's founding Dominican Sisters, was done by David Govedare of Chewelah and mounted for display in August of 1994.

"FROM SHADOWS AND IMAGINATION
INTO REALITY "

THE SISTERS' HEADS ARE LIFTED AND THEIR
EYES ARE FIRMLY FIXED UPON A VISION
INSPIRED BY THEIR FOUNDER, ST. DOMINIC.
SINCE 1925, WHEN THE FIRST SISTERS ARRIVED
IN THE NORTHWEST FROM GERMANY,
THE DOMINICAN SISTERS OF SPOKANE SERVED
WHEREVER THE NEED WAS GREATEST, PLANTING
AND NURTURING SEEDS OF MINISTRY WITH
OTHERS WHO SHARED THEIR MISSION.

DEDICATED IN LOVING GRATITUDE
AUGUST, 1994
