The Cosumnes River begins in El Dorado County (Sierra Nevada Mts.), flows through El Dorado Co., Amador County, Sacramento County, and into San Joaquin County. The river is 52 miles / 84.5 kilometers

and is one of the last free flowing rivers in California. (There are two private diversion dams only) It flows into the Mokelumne River only a 1/2 mile from the Cosumnes River wetlands preserve. The preserve is PUBLIC proberty AND includes a place to launch kayaks, canoes, or non motorized craft. AND the State Lands Commission AND the Dept of Water Resources; Ducks Unlimited; Sacramento Co. Dept. of Regional Parks, Galt Joint Union Elementary School District; the Natural Resources Conservation Service. All have signed a Cooperative Management Agreement that contributes to the planning and operation of the Preserve. There is a Visitor Center and a strong volunteer presence.
Take I-5 south of Sacramento to Twin Cities Road exit east. Continue on Franklin Blvd.
