To the rear of the hospital, on the east side, is the helipad used for emergency transport of patients. The windsock makes it quite easy to spot.
Providence Health Services in Washington was born in 1856, with the arrival of five nuns, the Sisters of Providence, from Montreal at Fort Vancouver on the banks of the Columbia River. Beginning by housing orphans and the elderly, they soon began building and opening hospitals throughout Washington. Through the years their network of small hospitals expanded into what is now a five-state, not-for-profit health and services network with more than 60,000 employees.
This hospital opened in 1929 and has 25 acute care beds and 40 long term care beds, with primary and OB/GYN physicians available. Saint Joseph's is one of 12 ministries in Eastern Washington providing health care services.
Today the hospital offers most of the health care facilities and technology one would expect to find in a larger centre, right in the small city of Chewelah.
