"They are an adaptation of the Nereids of Greek and Roman mythology, the nymphs that live in the seas and rivers. These inhabit the river that flows in Lisbon, Portugal. The word was probably created by André Resende, who wrote it in his poem Vicentius (1545).
In his epic poem 'Os Lusíadas, Camões pray them as muses to inspire him and help him to sing the deeds of the Portuguese people."
