Smokey sure gets around. We caught up with him yet again in Chewelah, where he was just hanging aimlessly around the city park.

On this day Smokey's sign apprised us of the fact that the fire danger was low. It was raining at the time, so we believed him.
Smokey the Bear will turn 80 years old on August 9th, 2024. He was born in 1944 as a new member of the Forest Service to teach people about outdoor fire safety, and preventing forest fires. His signature message was "Only you can prevent forest fires".
Every time I see Smokey Bear I remember still the lyrics I sang as a child.
Smokey the Bear, Smokey the Bear.
Prowlin' and a growlin' and a sniffin' the air.
He can find a fire before it starts to flame.
That's why they call him Smokey,
That was how he got his name.
