This cemetery is locally called the Civil War Cemetery; but to avoid confusion with other antebellum cemeteries, it is also known as the Old Newtonia Civil War Cemetery, and is recorded as such in FindAGrave. Although there were some graves without dates, the earliest recorded grave is from 1844. Every effort is made to keep the markers in good repair. Many of the old markers are framed by angle irons to keep them together and standing.
