In a small grass area along the sidewalk on West main Street, this is an abstract sculpture by artist, Jonathan W. Hils. It is approximately eight feet high and consists of four curved panels reaching out in four directions from a center point. it is constructed of stainless steel, and each panel has hundreds of facets - uneven shaped holes in the metal, giving a lacy appearance.
Jonathan Hils is a professor at nearby Oklahoma University. A newspaper article foretelling of this sculpture's placement describes it as "a silver cloud formation shaped by a manipulation of Norman's downtown streets and laid out as a weather vane."
Mr. Hils' website shows that he does many similar items that have a large and heavy, but delicate look. The artist describes his work with this statement: "Absence and presence are integral to my work. Using chaotic systemization and repetitive actions, my work intertwines substantial aspects of physical complexity that coalesce into works that have a distinct sense of delicacy and order. The relationship between interior and exterior space, permeable and retentive, and varying line/light density are achieved through obsessive fabrication and drawing techniques inspired by nature, science and industry. Associates to manufacturing, fractals, and organic bio-computational forms are evident whether generated by fabricating thousands of small steel components together or rendering digitally drawn vertices patterns. Most of my work alludes to organic abstraction while hinting at a manufacturing or industrial aesthetic often seen in both man-made and natural constructions. Occasionally, works that are more representational in nature and informed by a desire to implicate politics, race, and belief systems into a broader dialogue of systemization and chaos."
A bronze plaque at the base of the sculpture reads:
