IMPORTANT: May 28 2008 Alma College was destroyed by fire.
The doors of Alma College officially opened to daughters of the elite on October 13, 1881. For over one hundred years, young women filled the classrooms within its walls. It closed in 1994 and today it stands empty and derilect. Signs are posted regarding the restoration of the building to retirement living but those plans have been cancelled. Demolition of the building is being considered. Public outcry and the Heritage Committee have so far stopped demolition, although much of the interior and windows have been removed by the owner.
Alma College is on Heritage Canada's top 10 most endangered places list.
