This building is actually two buildings the 16 story Arcade Building completed in 1918 and the 18 story Wright Building completed in 1907. While building the Arcade Building quicksand was encountered and pilings had to be sunk 50 feet into the ground, to offset the higher costs the more stories were added than originally planned to gain a higher return. Also while building the Arcade Building it was intended to connect to a nearby railroad tunnel however the smoke from the steam locomotives did not make this possible.

The Arcade Building received its name due to the shopping arcade with many shops which ran the length of the building on two floors, a precursor to today's shopping malls.

The buildings have remained vacant for several years and have faced several attempts to have them demolished . Finally, there is an development effort which will restore these buildings.
