Clark climbed a cliff near by and decided they would not need to portage thru the rapids. While up there he incorrectly identified Mt. Adams as Mt. St. Helens. Upon seeing (banks of mussle shels here they named the rapids Muscle Shell rapid). The name was later changed to Umatilla rapids. (spelling is from the Lewis diary)
