Seinen Platz fand das Denkmal im Jahr 1973, dem Jahr mit einer so noch nie beobachteten Sturmflutkette zwischen dem 13.11. und dem 14.12. (der Wasserstand bei Dieksiel betrug am 19.11.1973 4,15m über NN). Eine Inschrift erinnert an die Weihnachtsflut von 1717 mit über 10.000 Toten an den niederländischen und friesischen Küsten. In Ostfriesland wurden damals über 900 Häuser weggespült und in manchen Regionen betrug der Bevölkerungsverlust 30%.

The monument was placed in 1973, the year with such a never observed storm tide chain between the Nov 13th and Dec 14th (the water level at this location on 19.11.1973 was 4,15 m above sea level). An inscription commemorates the Christmas flood of 1717 with over 10,000 deaths on the Dutch and Frisian coasts. In East Frisia at that time more than 900 houses were washed away and in some regions the population loss was 30%.
