This contemporary Coast Salish housepost portrays a frog holding onto sea otters, who are representations of power symbols. The Sun, who sits atop the pole, is considered to be the grandfather and watches over the scene below.
The totem pole was commissioned by the 2003 graduates of the university's social work program and is dedicated to the Lekwungen elders of the past and present. Being a housepost, the location for the pole was selected because the Student Union Building is considered to be the "on-campus house" for the students.
