The film starts with the funeral of Poirot, attended by Miss Lemon, Captain Hastings and Assistant Commissioner Japp. Japp tells his companions of how Poirot came to die.

Poirot and Japp attended a chess match between Abe Ryland and chess champion Dr Savaranoff. During the match Savaranoff dies. Poirot investigates and finds that Savaranoff was electrocuted by the chess board. When Poirot and Japp go to visit Ryland they find he has disappeared. Ryland was a prominent member of the Peace Party.

Poirot is approached by a journalist called Tysoe. Tysoe claims that Ryland is one of a group called the Big Four, a group that does not have peaceful intentions. Tysoe gives publicity to the Big Four idea, which catches the public imagination.

Another member of the Peace Party is Stephen Paynter. Paynter is found dead at home. Suspicion turns to another Peace Party member, Madame Olivier, Paynter’s lover. Like Ryland she disappears. The original founder of the Peace Party, Li Chang Yen, has also disappeared. The implication is that Ryland, Olivier and Li Chang Yen are three of the Big Four.

Poirot finds information that leads him to a repertory company. He searches through a list of actors until he finds an actress called Flossie. Flossie remembers a fellow actor, Albert Whalley. Whalley has used his acting skills to act as Paynter’s physician. Poirot now realises that Whalley is the murderer. Further, the Big Four was Whalley’s invention, a ruse to gain Flossie’s affections.

Poirot gets a note asking him to go to a flat. He goes to the flat, realises there is a bomb, and flees just before it explodes. Poirot goes to ground as his funeral is arranged. Some time later he goes to an abandoned theatre where Flossie and Whalley trod the boards. He finds Whalley on stage with Ryland and Olivier immobilised by a drug called gelsemine. In a showdown with Poirot and Flossie Whalley is killed by Tysoe before Whalley is able to detonate his bomb.

Poirot eventually reappears at his flat to explain to his friends that he is not dead.
