Located at the NW corner of the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) campus is a newer native plant garden that was developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, OIT and volunteers from the Schoolyard Habitat Program. This native garden comprises a zigzagging rock path that meanders up a hill and there are placards along the way that focus on specific native plants and trees that make up this garden.
This particular placard highlights the Oak Woodland Community that exists here in the Klamath Basin. Native oaks here include the Oregon White Oak and the California black oak. The acorn woodpecker is a native bird that depends on the oaks here for a food source.
I didn't see the small oak plantings that were put in until after I left but will return again and upload a picture of them to this waymark. The oaks are located directly in front of this placard but down the hillside and not easily visible.
