I remember hearing about Mark all too well. This year marks the 10-year anniversary.
On January 8, 2004, while on a ride on a biking trail at Whiting Ranch, Mark was fatally attacked by a mountain lion. The lion attacked again later the same day (see the following website for more details) and the park was closed for several weeks.
Cougars or Mountain Lions are sighted in this park often, be aware of your surroundings!
from a website dedicated to him Mark Reynolds Fund "Mark Jeffery Reynolds, a native of St. Joseph, Missouri, lost his life in a tragic ~Mountain Lion attack~ while mountain biking near his home in California and the motocross and cycling community suffered a great loss."
I found this very recent article as well LA Times 02.17.14
