The M1918M1 155mm Gun (GPF) was based on the French Canon de 155 Grande Puissance Filloux (GPF) mle.1917. It was used by the United States Army and United States Marine Corps as their primary heavy artillery gun under the designation 155 mm Gun M1917 or M1918 until 1942, when it was gradually replaced by the 155 mm M1A1 "Long Tom".
The solid rubber tire M1918A1 carriages were obsolete by World War II when US guns were taken out of storage and utilized for coast defense of US and allied territories, such as Australia, typically on "Panama" mountings - the gun swiveling on a central concrete pillar with the split trails spread out on rails around the pillar.
During World War II Fort Morgan had five of these guns, two on "Panama mounts" on top of the southern bastions and three others use outside the fort. These guns replaced the original 12" disappearing rifles that had been mounted in Battery DuPortail inside the fort.
