The Edmond Soccer Club maintains sixteen soccer fields at their facility on Danforth. This life-sized bronze sculpture titled "Striker" is a beautiful depiction of the style and action of the soccer player.
The subject is a young girl dressed in shorts and T-shirt with "EDMOND" on her shirt, about to kick the ball into the goal. She is running and her right leg behind her is prepared to connect with the ball in the very next second. Her arms are outstretched for balance. She is a Striker - the player whose job it is to kick the ball into the opponents' goal. She is an offensive player and positions herself to receive the ball from the Midfielders. The primary point scorer on the team, she most often takes the penalty shots as well.
Gary Alsum describes his art as a "celebration of the gift of life." Many, but not all of his sculptures are of children, and his specialty is catching people in motion. This is a 'striking' sculpture (pun intended) and well worth your visit. It is located just west of of the field house on the east side of the soccer fields. The west gate is open most days, but would require a walk across the fields. The best time to find the east gate open is during a game or practice session. We gained access on a Saturday afternoon.
