Workhouses were to help the most poor and destitute to have work, shelter and food. Life in these establishments was not the best and bad behaviour was not tolerated.
The plaue on the wall of this building on Market Place at Charing indicated that this building was their workhouse. Just below the plaque is a smalll window where money was handed out to the poor of the village.
The plaque, placed by the Charing & District Local History Society has the following words on it.
"Alms were handed through the small window below to those in need. Charing Parish treated its poor well"
