UNION CEMETERY, 1720 W. Market St., comprises 121 acres of land, much of it still covered with virgin timber. Among those buried here are three of the 'Fighting McCooks' of Civil War fame: General Anson McCook, Colonel George McCook, and Captain Francis McCook, grandfather of Woodrow Wilson; and the Edwin M. Stanton family. -Ohio: The Ohio Guide, 1940, pg. 321.
Union Cemetery continues as an active cemetery. The cemetery spread across many hills is well maintained. The cemetery has two veterans sections, an older one with many Civil War veterans buried in graves on the hillside surrounding the Civil War Memorial, high on the hill top, the other veterans section is a more modern section with artillery pieces. The cemetery has several thousand graves spread across its 121 acres.
