Den dansende faun lader vinen løbe ned i munden fra et vædderhorn. Vinsækken, han holder, er lige så tom, som han selv er fuld. I den romerske mytologi er fauner eller satyrer børn af frugtbarhedsguderne Faunus og Fauna.
Under sit ophold i Italien i 1840'erne blev Kolberg inspireret af antikkens kunst, bl.a. af de pompejanske småbronzer, som det her kan ses.

The dancing faun let the wine run down into the mouth of a ram's horn. Wine bag, he holds, is as empty as he himself is full. In Roman mythology, fauns and satyrs children of fertility gods Faunus and Fauna.
During his stay in Italy in the 1840s was Kolberg inspired by ancient art, including the Pompeian small bronzes, as this can be seen here.
