We were passing the Nelson United Church when we noted a lady hauling buckets and boxes of food into the church. Curious, we offered to help her if she would tell us what the food was for, whereupon she related the fact that it was for the food bank. BINGO! Just what we suspected.
Talking to the ladies which run the food bank, we learned that it is operated by the
Nelson Food Cupboard Society. They presently feed about 1,000 people per month from Nelson and the surrounding area, one quarter of which are children. They have over 100 volunteers with food and money being continually donated by local businesses and individuals. With an operating budget of nearly $125, 000 the food bank is supported financially by the Government of British Columbia, the Columbia Basin Trust, the Kootenay Coop Grocery Store, MAZON Canada, the Regional District of Central Kootenay and the Osprey Community Foundation.
